HEIs invited to tender for new genomics pedagogy scheme

Higher education institution sought to deliver education and research to support the genomics educator workforce

The Genomics Education Programme (GEP) is pleased to announce a unique opportunity for a higher education institution (HEI) to partner with the GEP to develop an innovative pedagogical package to upskill the genomics educator community.

The Genomics Pedagogy Scheme, or GPeds, will comprise three arms:

  • a three-year PhD fellowship focused on pedagogic research;
  • a level 7 pedagogic qualification; and
  • a continuing professional development (CPD) programme.

What is GPeds?

GPeds has been conceived to promote and facilitate professional development and research in genomics pedagogy. The scheme will be a collaboration between the GEP, including the Genomics Training Academy, and one or more HEI.

The GPeds package will be aimed at genomics workforce educators in the NHS. To access funding for this pedagogic professional development, they must be in a role that is genomics focused and are working in a significant education and/or training capacity. A review panel will be set up by the GEP to check funding applications.

Why is the work important?

GPeds will provide opportunities for professional development and research within the genomics educator community, which will in turn lead to better genomics education and training for the wider healthcare workforce – a priority identified in the Long Term Workforce Plan.

Good-quality education, training and development supports the retention of staff as well as the delivery of better care for patients and their families.

Who is eligible to tender?

The GEP is looking for an HEI with the capacity and capability to deliver this innovative educational and research-informed scheme over a 40-month period.

The successful HEI(s) will assemble a team with senior pedagogic leadership, research co-ordinators and clerical staff. They will be expected to deliver CPD resources within four months of the contract start date. Further KPIs and project milestones are available on the procurement portal (see below).
