Visual communication aids for genomics conversations
Visual aids are often helpful when communicating with patients about genomics and can improve understanding and recall of complex information.
Using visual communication aids
The visual communication aids (VCAs) linked below are designed to complement discussions with patients during a consultation. Each VCA includes a visual element, a corresponding patient-friendly explanation and definitions of some key words or phrases. The explanation can be used as a basic guide for your conversation. Some explanations may need to be adapted for your patient’s specific scenario.
These VCAs can be printed, or used digitally. Each VCA is arranged on two pages and optimised for double-sided printing. You may wish to give a VCA to your patient as a take-home resource or include it in a letter. In the first instance, it is recommended to talk through the VCA during a consultation.
