New Genomics Learning Passport for Nurses
Hot on the heels of the learning passport for midwives, the Central and South GMSA has developed this useful learning tool for nurses
With genomics increasingly playing a part in routine patient care, it is important that all nurses have a role-appropriate level of knowledge about genomics, as outlined in the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards of proficiency for registered nurses.
There is a wide range of learning opportunities available for nurses on the Genomics Education Programme website and beyond, whether you are at the start of your genomics learning journey or are looking to build your knowledge further – but it can be tricky to know where to start.
To address this, the Central and South Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA) has developed the Genomics Learning Passport for Nurses. It is designed to guide nursing practitioners through four phases of learning:
- the fundamentals of genomics that all nurses should know;
- intermediate learning for nurses in specialist roles or those keen to continue building their knowledge;
- specialist learning for nurses with substantial genomics knowledge to further expand your expertise; and
- Master’s level education and clinical resources to support your practice, as well as teaching resources for nursing educators.
